What I always love and will love about Tom is his standing up for what he believed in- regardless of personal cost.

Let me quote you this from Peter Oborne's book on Dolly....regarding Gubby Allen rather than Dolly on this account. Page 212 if you have the book:

'It was thanks to him, for instance, that Tom Graveney, the most classical batsman in the English game, endured long periods in the wilderness...Graveney played in fewer than half the Tests played under Allen's time as chairman of selectors....for twenty years or more, Allen got his way in English cricket. His prejudices became MCC prejudices, his enemies MCC enemies, his favourites MCC favourites..'

That's a good article, and brings back lovely memories of watching Tom in my youth. As I said on this thread a few day's ago, his batting had an elegant ease and his strokes looked effortless.
